The Importance of Good Neighbors
One tenet of crime prevention is watching out and helping out. We must reach out to our fellow citizens to ensure the safety of our communities.
FBI: Crime Is Down Nationwide
The FBI’s annual Crime in the United States report is out and overall, reported crime rates are down from 2006. Does that mean our work is done? Not by a long shot.
Child Abductions: How To Keep Children Safe
Child abductions are occurring much more frequently than most of us would guess. Nonfamily abductions, although infrequent, may pose the direst of consequences.
Death at the Hands of a Community Gun
The death of a 10 year-old girl has left an entire city in mourning. But what’s more shocking is the weapon used to kill her.
Finding the Best Way to Reduce School Violence
When we fear for our children’s safety, we automatically think of adding security precautions to take the violence out of schools. However, a new study shows that new metal detectors and added security personnel are not necessarily the best way to protect our children.
McGruff Shines with the S.T.A.R.S.!
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office in California started the S.T.A.R.S. program (“The “Sheriff’s Team of Active Retired Seniors”) in March 1993. Since that time, a small group of 16 original volunteers has blossomed into a team of 130 seniors who are dedicated to serving their communities. These volunteers work closely with law enforcement, helping to make communities safer places to live, work, and play, and are often accompanied by McGruff. Special thanks to Officer Miranda Bowersox, Officer Roy Johnston, and John Welton who coordinate McGruff’s appearances at school and community events and promote McGruff’s “Take A Bite Out Of Crime®” message! —Deborah Boone
