Crime Prevention Matters, a brief white paper that NCPC released in the run-up to the presidential election, argues that people’s perceptions of crime—perhaps even more than reality—influence their behavior in ways that can have negative consequences for themselves, their families, their neighborhoods, and their communities. Leaders at all levels of government can counteract this phenomenon by helping their constituents understand the context of crime, their risk of victimization, and preventive measures they can take. Find a PDF of Crime Prevention Matters on NCPC’s website at http://www.ncpc.org/crime-prevention-matters.pdf. Order bulk copies in packages of 10 for $5, plus shipping and handling. You can order your copies by calling 800-627-2911.

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has published a new report on domestic police officers who are returning home after combat deployment and the psychological effects of combat deployment, methods that may lessen the severity of combat stress experienced, and strategies used by police agencies to help officers returning to work, their families, and their communities. The report highlights four police agencies that have taken measures to assist returning officers and offers recommendations for further study. This publication will be available soon in hard copy format from the COPS Office Response Center by calling 800-421-6770 and is now available online in PDF or text format.

Authors Ronald V. Clark and Graeme R. Newman argue that crime and terrorism are essentially similar and that the crime reduction approach afforded by crime science holds many lessons for the prevention of terrorism. Crime science includes situation crime prevention, CPTED, and problem-oriented policing. The publication is designed to help police executives, sheriffs, and other senior leaders meet the challenges involved in countering the threat of terrorism. It offers 50 briefs that focus on terrorism prevention and preparedness, and provides guidance on the essential components of a counterterrorism plan, such as developing intelligence on terrorist threats, identifying and protecting major targets, and expanding disaster-response capabilities. The publication is particularly relevant to law enforcement agencies that may have limited resources to devote to terrorism prevention and response. The publication is available in both hard copy and electronic format. Click here for more information.
