Introducing Celebrate Safe Communities!
We know that crime prevention must have local roots and be supported by the local citizenry if it is to be successful. From Neighborhood Watch to CPTED to school safety programs, if local citizens aren’t behind it, experience has taught us it simply won’t work.
Youth Court Movement Advances
In youth courts, teens dispense justice to other teens. They provide a foundation in good citizenship and give defendants a second chance that stops short of the traditional judicial system.
Sentencing Commission Levels Playing Field for Drug Offenses
The playing field for the appeal of crack cocaine offenses has been leveled, but effective reentry is the necessary next step.
Teenangels Take On Cyber Threats—And Earn Their Wings
The Teen Angels program makes teens experts on cyber safety issues. They even teach lessons to the FBI.
Correspondence From the Field
“I started doing McGruff in September 1982 and have worn out three suits. When I started the program I was in the Annual Potato Bowl Parade wearing the McGruff dog suit for the first time. Kids would point at me and say “Look at the dog,” but now, 26 years later, everybody knows McGruff. I have been the only one in Northeast North Dakota that does the McGruff program, and I get requests from other counties and even places in the State of Minnesota. I am the only one to wear the suit all these years and talk with hundreds of kids annually. I have been in law enforcement for 37 years and I have found McGruff to be the best way to get safety tips to kids.”
—Captain Bob Rost, Grand Forks County, ND, Sheriff’s Department
