Correspondence From the Field
North Dakota Captain embraces the use of McGruff.
“I started doing McGruff in September 1982 and have worn out three suits. When I started the program I was in the Annual Potato Bowl Parade wearing the McGruff dog suit for the first time. Kids would point at me and say “Look at the dog,” but now, 26 years later, everybody knows McGruff. I have been the only one in Northeast North Dakota that does the McGruff program, and I get requests from other counties and even places in the State of Minnesota. I am the only one to wear the suit all these years and talk with hundreds of kids annually. I have been in law enforcement for 37 years and I have found McGruff to be the best way to get safety tips to kids.”
—Captain Bob Rost, Grand Forks County, ND, Sheriff’s Department
