Drug-free Communities Support Program

Deadline: March 21, 2008
Eligibility: Community-based coalitions
Grants are available for the FY08 Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC), sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Applicants may receive up to $125,000 for their programs, which should focus on reducing substance abuse among youth by addressing the factors in the community that increase the risk of substance abuse. DFC projects must focus on multiple drugs of abuse. Additional information is available here.

National Neighborhood Watch Awards of Excellence

Deadline: March 31, 2008
Do you know of a program that is doing extraordinary things to promote Neighborhood Watch in their communities? Nominate it for the Fifth Annual National Neighborhood Watch Awards of Excellence. Any law enforcement agency, Neighborhood Watch, organization, or program that has made an exceptional contribution to Neighborhood Watch is eligible. Nominations can be submitted online or by fax or U.S. Mail.

OJJDP Sponsors Two Conferences for Community and Faith-based Organizations

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is sponsoring two regional conferences on accessing and retaining resources for Community and Faith-based Organizations. The Philadelphia, PA, conference will be held March 19–20, 2008, and the Los Angeles, CA, conference will be held April 1–2, 2008. Sessions will cover how to apply for government funding, how to attract private funding, how to manage financial growth, and how to manage and plan for organizational growth. Both conferences are free to attend, so register early. COPS Launches Monthly Newsletter

The Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services has launched a new monthly newsletter online. The Community Policing Dispatch focuses on criminal justice issues that affect community policing implementation. The e-newsletter also aims to help law enforcement practitioners better address crime and social disorder in their communities.

Register for the Second International Summit on Conflict Resolution Education

The second Summit, Youth and Conflict: Global Challenges, Local Strategies, is an opportunity for schools, colleges and universities, non-governmental organizations, and governmental organizations to collaborate on and research issues of violence and conflict confronting our youth. Presentations will focus on conflict management and peace education strategies for youth and methods that reduce the societal violence that surrounds youth. Workshop topics include bullying prevention, classroom management, youth violence prevention, truancy, conflict management, social and emotional learning, preventing dating violence, trauma defusion, and gang prevention. April 13–19 Is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

Help your community promote awareness of victims’ rights during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) from April 13–19, 2008. This year’s theme is “Justice for Victims. Justice for All.” The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) has released its annual NCVRW Resource Guide online, which can be downloaded free from the site.
