National Institutes of Justice Annual Conference

The annual conference of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) of the U.S. Department of Justice brings scholars, policymakers, and practitioners together to share the latest findings of effective evidence-based policies and practices. The conference will be held from July 21–23, 2008, in Arlington, VA. This year’s conference includes a crime-mapping track with ten panels and the NIJ Town Hall—an open forum that will give participants an opportunity to discuss their concerns and questions directly with NIJ leaders. PSAs for Anti-Meth Campaign Targeting Native Americans and Native Alaskans

The Office of National Drug Control Policy partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, and the National Congress of American Indians to launch the American Indian Anti-Meth Campaign. This campaign is the first anti-meth campaign to target American Indians and Native Alaskans. Print and radio public service announcements (PSAs) are available as PDFs and MP3s at the MethResources.gov website.

OVC Online Resource Helps U.S. Citizens Victimized Abroad

More and more U.S. citizens live or travel overseas for work, school, and vacation every year and many don’t know how to protect themselves from crimes or even terrorist acts. The Office of Victims of Crime (OVC) teamed up with other with other federal and local service agencies to put together the Resource Guide for Serving U.S. Citizens Victimized Abroad for local victim service providers who work with U.S. citizens who were victims of crime outside the United States.

COPS Publishes New Quarterly Newsletter on Crime Geography

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services is publishing a newsletter on mapping, problem analysis, and other issues regarding the geography of crime. Geography and Public Safety is available quarterly and can be downloaded for free from the National Institute of Justice website.

Partnerships Between the Faith-Based Community and Victim Service Providers

“When people have something horrible happen to them, eventually it’s a spiritual struggle.” Wondering how your victim services program can partner with faith-based community organizations in your local community? Faith-Based Responses to Crime Victims, a 30-minute DVD produced by the Office for Victims of Crime, focuses on promising practices that might inspire you to expand your victim service networks.

Registration is Open for the G.R.E.A.T. National Training Conference

The Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program will hold its annual conference July 16–18, 2008, in St. Louis, MO. The conference will provide strategies for preventing youth crime, violence, and gang involvement, as well as developing positive relationships with youth. Video on Preventing Financial Abuse of Older Americans Available

The Santa Clara County, CA, Department of Aging and Adult Services created a Financial Abuse Specialist Team (FAST) that was nationally recognized for its work to protect older Americans from financial abuse. Their work is featured in a 30-minute video, Financial Abuse Specialist Team. The video spotlights the work of the Santa Clara FAST program and covers all aspects of elder financial abuse and how you can set up a FAST program in your community.
