Register for the First Annual Celebrate Safe Communities!

Long-time partners the National Sherriffs’ Association; the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice; and the National Crime Prevention Council have teamed up for the Celebrate Safe Communities project. Celebrate Safe Communities spotlights communities’ crime prevention efforts, enhances public awareness of vital crime prevention and safety messages, and recruits year-round support for ongoing prevention activities that help keep neighborhoods safe from crime. Online registration and a resource center are now available to help local law enforcement plan, organize, and implement their local crime prevention events during Crime Prevention Month this October. Community Participation in Homeland Security: Report of the National Watch Groups Summit

New Resource From NCPC!

This report summarizes the first-ever National Watch Groups Summit held in May 2007. Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, and NCPC, the summit brought together representatives from 35 different Watch Groups from across the country to discuss the role they play in homeland security and community preparedness. Fellowship Funds Available for Dissertation Research on Crime and Justice

Deadline: November 21, 2008

Up to ten awards of $20,000 each will be awarded for costs associated with dissertation research on crime or justice issues. Awards will be made to degree-granting educational institutions only. The National Institute of Justice hopes these awards will encourage promising doctoral students to apply critical and innovative thinking to pressing criminal justice problems. The Office of Victims of Crime, U.S. Department of Justice, has announced that next year’s National Crime Victims’ Rights Week will be held from April 26–May 2, 2009. National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is commemorated every year with rallies, vigils, and other activities to promote victims’ rights and to honor crime victims and their advocates. COPS Office Releases Report on Hot Spot Policing

Police Enforcement Strategies to Prevent Crime in Hot Spot Areas summarizes the findings from academic studies that evaluated police enforcement strategies in hot spot areas. Their research showed that concentrating efforts on areas with high incidence of crime and calls for service could be used to effectively prevent crime in those areas.
