Investing in Reentry: A List of NCPC Resources

NCPC’s work to prevent recidivism includes webinars, publications, e-courses, and a highly regarded listserv.

By Famin Ahmed, NCPC Staff

The National Crime Prevention Council believes that investing in reentry is an investment in the community and has collaborated on a number of resources to help prevent recidivism.

In collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the Community Capacity Development Office at the U.S. Department of Justice, NCPC has produced 28 webinars on prisoner reentry efforts in the last three years. They have focused on such reentry issues as mental health, substance abuse, reentry mapping, and child support, among other topics. Information on how to download the webinars is available here, with additional webinars on the CNCS Resource Center website.

NCPC offers training on a variety of reentry issues, including Understanding Prisoner Reentry, Reentry: Coming to a Community Near You, and Legal Dos and Don’ts for Faith-based and Community Organizations. In the last two years, NCPC has teamed up with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to train SAMHSA grantees on reentry issues. NCPC has also trained national service audiences on the issue of reentry. For more information about NCPC’s reentry training courses, email Drew Carberry at dcarberry@ncpc.org.

NCPC hosted and moderated an acclaimed listserv on reentry. The listserv had provided more than 400 reentry topic postings on research, policy, news, and the latest trends in reentry.

Also in collaboration with CNCS and the Community Capacity Development Office, NCPC coordinated VISTA’s reentry initiative by hosting the inaugural AmeriCorps*VISTA Reentry Initiative training program in 2005. For this initiative, NCPC created an online learning tool on reentry, AmeriCorps*VISTA and Prisoner Reentry, and the Key Components of Effective Prisoner Reentry Programs handbook (PDF).

NCPC has also published a number of books and articles on reentry and recidivism.

NCPC has additional reentry and crime prevention resources at the CNCS Resource Center.
