New Tool for Substance Abuse Counselors: Video on Family Origins of Drug Addiction

The Partnership for a Drug-Free America has released a new video and companion materials that substance abuse counselors and others may want to use with young clients and their families who are affected by drug or alcohol addiction. The kit explores the historical genetic basis for some cases of addiction and presents it as a starting point for discussion with a child and family members.

Campus Law Enforcement Personnel To Gather

The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators will hold its annual meeting in Quebec City, Canada, June 20 – June 23, 2009. A full schedule of general sessions and workshops has been arranged, with topics ranging from crowd control to campus drinking to creating a campus climate of crime prevention and preparedness. Campus violence will also be examined. More than 100 exhibitors are expected.

Juvenile Arrest Data for 2007 Available in New Publication

A new publication from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention charts the latest trends in juvenile arrests. Drawn from data in the FBI’s Crime in the United States 2007 report, the 12-page document, Juvenile Arrests 2007, is available in PDF format. Print copies may be ordered online.

Fact Sheet on Youth Gangs Released

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention has released Highlights of the 2007 National Youth Gang Survey, a two-page fact sheet that was prepared by OJJDP’s National Youth Gang Center. The fact sheet summarizes findings from the National Youth Gang Survey for 2007 and provides data on the number of gangs, gang members, and gang-related crime. The fact sheet is available online in PDF format. You may also order print copies online.

Sex Offender Registration Law Updates

The Office of Justice Programs’ Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) Office has posted the latest edition of the Sex Offender Registration Law Update series.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Systems

A new publication, Racial and Ethnic Disparity and Disproportionality in Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice: A Compendium, presents information shared at a 2008 symposium that was sponsored by Georgetown University’s Center for Juvenile Justice Reform and the University of Chicago’s Chapin Hall.

New Blog on Meth

The Office of National Drug Control Policy has launched a new blog aimed at fighting the use of methamphetamines. The DiscussMeth Web Forum is intended to foster a shared sense of mission among those engaged in this effort. Users can register online to read or join in discussions about treatment or prevention of meth abuse, or enforcement of laws against meth. The blog has already had hundreds of visitors.

Guidance for Performance Measures in Child Abuse and Neglect Cases

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention has released a Toolkit for Court Performance Measures in Child Abuse and Neglect Cases. The kit provides detailed guidance about court performance measures and offers a general approach that can help dependency courts successfully implement a performance measurement process. Pilot-tested at 12 sites, the kit reflects experience that will make it useful for any juvenile or family court. It includes five publications: Technical Guide, Implementation Guide, User’s Guide, Assessment Guide, and Key Measures. Read PDFs of the publications or order a copy of the Toolkit here.

New Publication on Preventing Crime By Enhancing Lighting

Improving Street Lighting to Reduce Crime in Residential Areas, a new publication from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, examines improvements in lighting designed to reduce crime in public streets and alleys in residential neighborhoods. It also discusses measures for assessing the effectiveness of lighting solutions that have been implemented.
