Did you know that 43 percent of 16-year-old kids report being cyberbullied? Did you know that 160,000 students miss school every day due to the fear of bullying and cyberbullying? A child who’s a victim of bullying or cyberbullying is more likely to perform worse in school than other students and is at high risk for depression and even suicide. And are you aware that your child could be one of those kids and you probably wouldn’t even know it? Nine out of ten students who are cyberbullied never tell their parents about it.
Cyberbullying is a relatively new phenomenon. This form of online bullying is particularly hurtful because the victims often can’t escape it and sometimes never know who is behind it. And nasty messages or photos can be sent to hundreds of people at a time to live forever in cyberspace. For many, it begins to feel like there is an anonymous group of people out to destroy them.
Here at NCPC, we are continuing our campaign of education and awareness to catapult this issue into the national consciousness. Our award-winning public service announcements have been seen by millions of people, but it’s not enough. We need to educate teachers and parents at their workplaces and in their children’s schools. We need to provide in-school training to students, teaching them what to do if they are victims of bullies and cyberbullies and teaching the perpetrators about the effects they are having on their victims.
Learn more about bullying and cyberbullying, what kids need to know to protect themselves, and what parents can do to help.
