D.A.R.E. Conference Set For July 21-23, 2009

The D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) International Training Conference will be held July 21-23 in Orlando, FL. Dozens of workshop topics range from Understanding Poverty Level Students in the 21st Century, and Underground: The Hidden Truth Behind Human Trafficking to The Choking Game and Violent and Sexual Juvenile Behaviors. National Safe and Drug-Free Schools Conference Set For August

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools will hold its 2009 National Conference August 3-5, 2009, in National Harbor, MD, just outside Washington, DC. The conference, whose theme is The Power of Change, will address issues related to civic and character education, crisis planning, mental and physical health, substance abuse, and violence prevention, among others. The deadline for registration is July 10. There is no registration fee. However, early registration is encouraged as space is limited. Funding Available From the National Institute of Justice
  • The National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice is seeking applications for funding to evaluate the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) program. As of Fiscal Year 2008, the SAVIN program has provided funding for 33 States and Puerto Rico for the development, implementation, and/or enhancement of a victim notification system. The deadline for applications is July 20, 2009.
  • The National Institute of Justice is seeking applications for funding to support criminal justice researcher-practitioner collaborations. This solicitation is aimed at developing existing partnerships, establishing new partnerships, and capturing significant lessons that have been learned through past and current researcher-practitioner partnerships. The deadline for applications is July 20, 2009.
Checklist for Call Takers on Missing and Sexually Exploited Children

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers a checklist for call takers who respond to calls pertaining to missing and sexually exploited children. This checklist can be used to help ensure the appropriate information is obtained during the call. A free copy can be downloaded from the organization’s website; a hard copy is available for sale.

Sounding the Alarm in a Weak Economy: Child Abuse and Neglect

Fight Crime, Invest in Kids, a nonprofit organization, has released a research paper that deals with the struggles of families to cope with the financial and emotional stress of the current recession and the apparent rise of child abuse and neglect as a result. While the intended audience is law enforcement, anyone who works with children will find the report useful. It is titled Sounding the Alarm in a Weak Economy: Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect by Strengthening Families.

School of Police Staff and Command Training Open For Applications

The International Association of Chiefs of Police Foundation has announced a continuing partnership with Northwestern University Center for Public Safety a 10-week School of Police Staff and Command course to be administered at the Louisiana State Police Training Academy from August 24-October 30, 2009. The Foundation welcomes participation from any agency in the Gulf region. As part of the Foundation’s commitment to professional development and no-cost training, this program is meant to provide instruction to agencies that would otherwise be unable to send participants due to cost or travel restrictions. Funding Available To Prevent Youth Gang Involvement

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention is seeking applications for the Gang Prevention Youth Mentoring Program to establish mentoring programs that offer core services and engage youth with activities that enable them to practice healthy behaviors within a positive, pro-social peer group. The target population includes youth at risk for gang involvement, delinquency, and violence.

Training Modules in E-Safety For a Variety of Audiences

i-Safe Inc., a nonprofit foundation whose mission is to provide education to students, parents, seniors, and community members about Internet safety, has partnered with Microsoft to create five different online, independent study course modules. They are aimed at educators, those who are 50-plus years of age, parents, mentors, and law enforcement.

Conference on Victim Assistance in August

The National Organization for Victim Assistance will hold its 35th annual conference in Scottsdale, AZ, from August 23-27, 2009. This year’s theme is 35 Years of Excellence in Training, Advocacy, and Empowerment. Visit this site information on registration and scholarships.

Improving Community Policing Initiatives

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, U.S. Department of Justice, has released Community Policing Defined, a 16-page document that provides detailed descriptions of community partnerships, organizational strategies, and problem-solving techniques needed for delivering effective services. This publication explains how these elements help ensure proactive and systematic responses to public safety issues such as crime, the fear of crime, and social disorder.

New Report on ‘Stop Snitching’ Phenomenon

A new, 64-page publication from the COPS office, The Stop Snitching Phenomenon: Breaking the Code of Silence, explores the causes of this movement and its effects. This report covers promising programs and partnerships for addressing the issue and taking back the communities affected by it. It also discusses how to protect witnesses and prevention efforts.
