Safer Schools By Design
This course offers participants an agenda packed with interactive sessions using advanced Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies and solutions to promote safety, orderly behavior, and a reduction of fear in the school environment. There are technical sessions on transportation, signage, landscaping, and lighting. Additionally, participants are guided through a comprehensive school assessment process followed by a real assessment of a school. Working in teams, participants will develop, prioritize, and present feasible recommendations for improving safety and comfort of students and staff. CPTED in schools
- Uses design to discourage undesirable behavior, disorder, and criminal acts
- Encourages team work among law enforcement, school administrators, staff, teachers, parents, students, and designers
- Provides an opportunity for youth and adults to work together to assess problems and prevent future problems
- Makes planning for new schools or building renovations more cost efficient—no costly retrofits to address safety concerns
The next Safer Schools By Design session will be held September 24–25 in Oxnard, CA. For information on scheduling and costs, contact Sarita Coletrane at 202-261-4162, or coletrane@ncpc.org.
