National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. This observance, which is sponsored by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers, and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible. This year’s theme is Together We Learn, Together We Heal. Community Preparedness Conference This Month

The 2009 National Conference on Community Preparedness: The Power of Citizen Corps is being hosted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Preparedness Division on August 9 – 12 in Arlington, VA, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. The conference is intended to help communities become safer, stronger, and better prepared for all types of hazards.

Crime Mapping Research Conference in Mid-August

The application of geographic principles to crime and public safety problems has come into the mainstream as the reemergence of geography has become a primary component of solving problems. The theme of this National Institute of Justice conference, which will be held August 19 – 22 in New Orleans, LA, is Solving Problems With Geography and Technology. Registration is free.

Chiefs of Police To Meet in October

The 2009 Annual Conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police is set for October 3 – 7 in Denver, CO. More than 15,000 law enforcement professionals are expected to attend the conference, the 16th annual gathering of its kind. The conference will feature speakers, forums, and technical workshops, and the largest exhibit hall of products and services for the law enforcement community. Register here.

Generational Challenges in Law Enforcement Course

The International Association of Chiefs of Police is holding a Managing Generational Change course in White Bear Lake, MN, on August 25 – 26, 2009. The course contends that generational changes have led to a new set of problems for law enforcement managers and supervisors. To some supervisors and managers, new employees from Generations X and Y do not seem to have the same level of dedication to the job, and, in turn, they do not seem to be as willing to pay their dues to get the privileges earned by earlier generations. The hands-on course is aimed at resolving these problems and perceptions.

Youth Court Training Offered

The National Association of Youth Courts is offering online training and audio teleconferences to help youth volunteers perform their roles in youth courts more effectively. The online courses are Getting the Most Out of the Deliberation Process and Preparing Your Case. The audio teleconferences are Making Evaluation for Youth Court Simpler Using Performance-Based Measures and Effective Strategies for Searching for Youth Court Funding and Writing Grants.

Economic Crime Conference To Be Held in Ohio

The National White Collar Crime Center, in collaboration with the Ohio Auditor of State’s Office, will host the Ohio Economic Crime Symposium on October 22, 2009, in Columbus, OH. The theme is Flourishing Frauds in a Faltering Economy, and the focus will be on the economy’s impact on white collar crime.

Underage Drinking Conference in August

The 11th National OJJDP Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center Leadership Conference will take place in Dallas, TX, August 13 – 14, 2009. For the past 11 years, this event has been the premier research-based conference on underage drinking prevention and enforcement. This year’s theme is Beyond Boundaries: Timely Trends and Technology. Innovative workshops will cover virtually every topic related to the effective prevention and enforcement of underage drinking.

Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Prevention Conference

The National Children’s Advocacy Center will host the 10th National Conference on Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation in New Orleans, LA, August 25 – 27, 2009. The conference is intended to improve the lives of children throughout the country and the world. For participants arriving early, NCAC is arranging a special activity to help with the New Orleans rebuilding efforts.

Statistical Report on Prisoners in 2007

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a Bulletin that presents data from the National Prisoner Statistics program. It describes the change in the prison population during 2007 and the characteristics of the 1,598,316 prisoners under state or federal jurisdiction on December 31, 2007. Conference on Victim Assistance in August

The National Organization for Victim Assistance will hold its 35th annual conference in Scottsdale, AZ, from August 23 – 27, 2009. This year’s theme is 35 Years of Excellence in Training, Advocacy, and Empowerment. Visit this site for information on registration and scholarships.

Training Available For Victim Service Professionals

The Office For Victims of Crime will hold several training workshops this fall, including one on Enforcing Victims’ Rights, on September 29 – 30, 2009, in Providence, RI, and another on Leadership in Victim Services, October 14 – 15, 2009, in Rapid City, SD. Multiagency Program Reduces Violent Crime

Project Safe Neighborhood, a multiagency program supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, is a nationwide effort aimed at reducing crime in the United States. Researchers analyzed violent crime statistics in cities with populations greater than 100,000. Comparing 82 Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) cities to 170 (nontarget) cities that did not implement PSN, they found a 4.1 percent decline in violent crime where PSN was implemented compared to a 0.9 percent decline in cities where it was not. Advanced Radio Technology for Law Enforcement

A new document from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Smart Radio for Police (PDF), describes two related developments in radio technology: software-defined radio and cognitive radio. With advances over the last few decades in digital electronics, radios now have more digital parts and function much like computers. These radios are much less expensive and more versatile than analog radios.

Improving Police Effectiveness in Domestic Violence Cases

NIJ has released a two-page document that analyzes domestic violence situations and discusses ways law enforcement officers can improve the effectiveness of arrests, conserve police resources, and increase conviction rates. Its title is Making Arrests in Domestic Violence Cases: What Police Should Know (PDF).

Exposure of Children to Violence

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Protection has published Healing the Invisible Wounds: Children’s Exposure to Violence (PDF and ordering information). This publication is intended to help parents and other caregivers understand the impact of exposure to violence on the development of children. The guide provides practical and age-specific recommendations for supporting the healing process.

Fact Sheets on Juveniles in Court

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention has released several fact sheets providing data derived from the report Juvenile Court Statistics, 2005. In 2005, U.S. courts responsible for juveniles handled 1.7 million delinquency cases. The fact sheets include “Delinquency Cases Waived to Criminal Court, 2005”; “Juvenile Delinquency Probation Caseload, 2005”; and “Person Offense Cases in Juvenile Court, 2005.”

School of Police Staff and Command Training Open For Applications

The International Association of Chiefs of Police Foundation has announced a continuing partnership with Northwestern University Center for Public Safety on a 10-week School of Police Staff and Command training at the Louisiana State Police Training Academy from August 24 – October 30, 2009. The foundation welcomes participation from any agency in the Gulf region. As part of the foundation’s commitment to professional development and no-cost training, this program provides instruction to agencies that would otherwise be unable to send participants due to cost or travel restrictions.
