A new document from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Smart Radio for Police (PDF), describes two related developments in radio technology: software-defined radio and cognitive radio. With advances over the last few decades in digital electronics, radios now have more digital parts and function much like computers. These radios are much less expensive and more versatile than analog radios.
