Designing Safer Communities: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Handbook
Neighborhoods may have problems with gang violence, drug trafficking, burglaries, assaults, and other crimes, and residents often say the area "doesn't feel safe" because streets are empty, properties have been abandoned, graffiti covers the sides of buildings, and trash collection is erratic. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) offers a framework to resolve these neighborhood and community problems and provides opportunities for crime prevention in new and revised construction and land use plans. CPTED is a tool for identifying, preventing, and solving local crime problems. It brings together local planners with police officers, residents, and members of local agencies to explore how an area's physical features can be designed or modified to reduce crime. Designing Safer Communities is a guide to CPTED principles and strategies. It presents a framework for developing policies and partnerships that address situational crime prevention and reviews the experiences of several states and communities that have successfully incorporated CPTED as a strategic approach to public safety.
For a limited time, we're offering this publication at $8.95 (plus shipping), $5 off the regular price of $13.95. Call 800-NCPC-911 to order your copy today. Ask for Offer A8. Additional discounts are available for bulk orders.
Special Discount: How Are We Doing? A Guide to Local Program Evaluation
If you're involved with designing or leading community programs, you'll need a copy of NCPC's practical guide to program evaluation. While many books describe evaluation, explain its theory, teach its techniques, and document its application, few are geared to the community or neighborhood level, and fewer still to the concept of crime prevention. This one fits the bill. Not only that, it picks up where most of the other guides to evaluation fail: it steers potential evaluators through a process that is within their means and that meets their needs.
This four-part guide to designing local program evaluations presents checklists, process outlines, methods choices, and key decision and timeline constructs for local programs that want to develop their own evaluations of program activities in crime prevention. It provides guidelines for developing measures, suggests sources of detailed help on specific evaluation techniques, describes challenges and ways to meet them, and discusses community assessments.
Order your copy of this essential evaluation guide now. We've discounted the price by one-third, from $13.95 to $9.35 (plus shipping). Bulk discount: Order 15 copies and get an additional 20 percent off your order. Call 800-NCPC-911 to order today. Ask for Offer A9.

Get Kids Involved in McGruff's Birthday
Adults shouldn't have all the fun in celebrating McGruff turning 25. That's why the National Crime Prevention Council is running the "Send McGruff a Birthday Card" contest.
At your next Back to School fair, Red Ribbon Week festivity, or community event, have children make a birthday card for McGruff. Ask children to be creative and draw, color, or paint the card however they'd like. Pick up to three winners for each event that you host and mail their cards, along with the artists' names, ages, and hometowns, to the National Crime Prevention Council. We'll pick the grand prize winners and feature their cards on McGruff.org for an entire month.
For contest rules and to find out about discount comic-activity books for contest organizers, visit www.ncpc.org and look under McGruff's 25 th anniversary. If you have any questions, please send them to mcgruff@ncpc.org.
