Ushering in the New Year
A Message From the President and CEO
Al Lenhardt, President and CEO
The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) has built an impressive record during 25 years of service to America. We plan to extend and enrich this record for another quarter of a century and beyond.
During the past year NCPC worked diligently to restructure its mission. Our old mission, “to enable people to create safer and more caring communities by addressing the causes of crime and violence and reducing the opportunities for crime to occur,” has been changed. Our new mission is
“To be the nation’s leader in helping people keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe from crime.”
We plan to accomplish our mission by achieving four strategic goals in the next five years. These goals will focus our work and enable us to leverage resources for greater impact. The goals are grounded in NCPC’s commitment to make America a safer and more caring nation and to reduce crime’s debilitating impact on society.
Goal one is to protect children and youth. NCPC is committed to safeguarding America’s children by working in partnership with parents, caregivers, schools, and law enforcement. NCPC will supply resources, tools, and training to reduce the opportunities for crime committed against children and youth. We will also offer programs that involve young people in making their communities safer.
Goal two is to partner with government and law enforcement to prevent crime. NCPC will increase the quality and quantity of our partnerships with government and law enforcement agencies. We will make our research, publications, and training more and more valuable to law enforcement and front-line crime prevention practitioners. NCPC will serve as the national voice promoting state and local crime prevention efforts, working in tandem with the Crime Prevention Coalition of America.
Goal three is to promote crime prevention and personal safety basics. NCPC will continue to provide critical programmatic support to local communities through training, tools, publications, and the evolving spectrum of communication techniques. We will continue to use McGruff’s powerful brand equity to deliver memorable crime prevention messages.
Gal four is to respond to emerging crime trends. NCPC is the only national organization committed solely to crime prevention. Leading a collation of local, state, and national organizations, NCPC has the ability to identify emerging crime trends and to deliver national results against such crime.
This issue of Catalyst provides resources grouped under our new mission categories to help you, the crime prevention practitioner, carry out your various missions. Crime prevention takes many forms and encompasses broad areas and types of expertise. We have included in this issue many types of organizations, form those that work with children to those that work with seniors, and from those that work on drug abuse prevention to those that work on diversity issues.
I and the staff of NCPC wish you and yours a safe and joyous holiday season, and best wishes for a Happy New Year! Thank you for your continuing efforts to “Take A Bite Out Of Crime.”
