Put Your Porchlight On and Get Ready to Celebrate National Night Out
Alfonso Lenhardt, President and CEO
This August 7, people all over the country will turn on their porch lights and host cookouts, block parties, and parades to show that they want to keep crime, violence, and drugs out of their neighborhoods as part of National Night Out (NNO). This is NNO’s 24th year and it is arguably the largest anti-crime event in the country. The National Crime Prevention Council is a proud partner and supporter of NNO.
Last year's NNO campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and local officials from more than 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. More than 34 million people participated in NNO 2006.
Each neighborhood’s National Night Out celebration is different, but all educate residents about crime, violence, and drug prevention; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and generate support for crime and drug prevention programs. NNO events send the message that communities are organized and fighting for a safer nation.
To register as a participant in NNO, visit www.nationalnightout.org/nno/reg.html. It doesn’t cost anything to register or participate. Once registered, coordinators receive an organizational kit of how-to materials filled with promotional ideas, guidelines, tips, camera-ready art , sample news releases and proclamations, and more. You will also receive NNO updates during the time leading up to the event.
