The National Crime Prevention Council has placed prevention at the forefront of the fight against identity theft. According to the latest statistics, identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes with almost ten million reported victims in 2004.
Through funding by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice, NCPC has developed an identity theft prevention initiative to help consumers take practical steps to protect their personal information. Beginning in mid-June, McGruff will help NCPC spread the prevention message through three public service announcements (PSAs) that depict scenarios showing how thieves can obtain our personal information. A special outreach effort to the broadcast community by the National Association of Broadcasters will help draw attention to the PSAs. In fall 2005, NCPC will add to the initiative with new radio PSAs.
