When the Crime Prevention Coalition of America was formally created in 1980, it consisted of just 19 organizations working to develop a public education message about the need for citizen and community action against crime. Today, the Coalition includes more than 285 national, federal, state, and local groups, representing thousands of constituents dedicated to crime prevention.
Coalition members represent a wide range of crime prevention advocates including the U.S. Department of Justice, branches of the U.S. military, the National Sheriffs' Association, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, U.S. Conference of Mayors, National League of Cities, state and local crime prevention associations, and community organizations.
Since its beginning, the Coalition has supported McGruff by sponsoring the public service advertising campaign with the U.S. Department of Justice. Coalition members work on the local level to motivate community residents to take action against crime. Activities include distributing the National Citizens' Crime Prevention Campaign public service advertising to local media outlets and circulating printed materials and other prevention information created by NCPC. All materials feature McGruff and his "Take A Bite Out Of Crime" slogan.
"2005 will be an exciting year for the Coalition as we, just like McGruff, celebrate our 25th year. Crime prevention is as vitally important to our communities today as it was when we began 25 years ago. I believe the Coalition of today and tomorrow represents the best of what communities can do to make crime prevention everybody's business," said Kim Dalferes, national director of the Coalition.
