Mobilizing the Nation To Prevent Crime, Violence, and Drug Abuse, 2005 Edition
Mobilizing the Nation is the 2005 annual report of the Crime Prevention Coalition of America (CPCA), a nonpartisan group of more than 300 national, federal, state, and local organizations representing thousands of constituents who are committed to preventing crime. This report celebrates the work of CPCA members, highlighting the breadth and diversity of prevention efforts in communities across the nation. Examples include the multifaceted approach of the Citizen Corps program, which includes the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), Neighborhood Watch, and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programs; the Amachi Big Brothers Big Sisters program for mentoring children of prisoners; and the Virginia Crime Prevention Association’s Call To Protect Program, which uses cell phones to fight domestic violence.
Members of the CPCA are law enforcement agencies, federal and state government agencies, state crime prevention programs and associations, youth development organizations, neighborhood and block watch groups, city and county government agencies, and national organizations. These organizations share a common vision that, by working together, they can create communities that are free from crime and the costs—physical, emotion, and financial—that crime imposes.

Parents and Their Children: Talking Together
This set of nine reproducible tip sheets, in English and Spanish, will help parents communicate more effectively with their children and teenagers. Important for all parents is “Talking With Your Child or Teen.” This tip sheet outlines strategies to help parents have productive conversations with their children. “Building Resiliency in Your Child or Teen” advises parents on ways to help their children develop safety skills, make the right kind of friends, and establish connections to other caring adults. While all parents will probably find valuable information in each of the tip sheets, four are directed to parents of teens, and three to parents of young children. Parents of teenagers may fear that they have little influence over their children’s decisions. But teens report that parents are more influential than friends, teachers, coaches, and the news media. These tip sheets give advice on alcohol and drugs, safe schools, dating violence, and gangs. Parents of young children will benefit from the tip sheets that address bullying, conflict, and diversity.
The reproducible tip sheets come in a folder with suggestions on their use.
