History and Background
This workshop takes a closer look at the history of community organizations and their delivery of social services. It reviews recent accomplishments including the President’s Faith-Based and Community Initiative and CNCS’s progress in engaging community organizations in national service.
Characteristics and Contributions of Community Organizations
This session reviews the latest research on the contributions of community organizations (secular and faith-based) to civil society. Participants discuss the characteristics of these organizations in relation to national service.
Partnership Stories and Case Studies
This workshop reviews examples of community organizations’ partnerships with state and federal agencies, examining the characteristics of both successful and unsuccessful partnerships. Participants share experiences of partnering with community organizations.
Problem Solving
Participants create a vision, uncover roadblocks, and develop their organization’s unique strategy for a successful program of reaching out and engaging community organizations in national service.
Legal Do’s and Don’ts
This session reviews the legal guidelines to follow when partnering with community organizations—particularly faith-based organizations. Participants walk through scenarios and discuss potential pitfalls and warning signs.
Building Partnerships
Participants learn about a step-by-step process to reach out and engage community organizations in national service. They outline specific strategies for their own organizations.

e-Learning Course: AmeriCorps*VISTA and Prisoner Reentry
This course is currently available through the Corporation for National and Community Service's Resource Center. It is a free interactive learning tool designed to assist private, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations—as well as federal, state, and local agencies—in applying to sponsor AmeriCorps*VISTA members. Members will serve in community projects focused on prisoner reentry: the process of transitioning from prison back into the community. You will need to create a login to access this e-learning course.
