In this session, teens will obtain both a local map and local crime statistics, and use their experience, the map, and statistics from the local police department to see where crimes reported to police have occurred.

 Tips to Enhance Session 5:

 Web Resources:

 Community Resource People:
  • Police officer: A police officer can share local crime statistics and the reasons for crime in certain areas of the community and state. The officer can also elaborate on the different ways students can stay safe.
Don’t forget to give the community resource person the session materials at least one week before he or she will participate in your class.

 Service-Learning Project Ideas:
  • Short Project: Students can photograph areas where they feel safe, and create posters and fliers urging people to work to make all places feel safe and secure.
  • Medium-Length Project: Students can create crime prevention brochures to teach peers or younger students how to stay safe in many places and situations.
  • Long Project: Students can conduct a "take back the park" initiative. Students will recruit adults and friends to help them clean up parks that have become rundown and unsafe.
