The Toughest Job of All
Crime prevention practitioners, social workers, and many other
specialists are all too familiar with the horrors of child abuse. They know how children can be damaged for life and families ripped apart by this terrible crime. According to Justice Department figures, more than 20 percent of all children are sexually abused before the age of eight,
and one in five children is solicited sexually while on the Internet.

Of the 600,000 prisoners released every year, an overwhelming majority are rearrested within three years. However, participants in the Safer Foundation’s programs who found jobs had a remarkable three-year recidivism rate of only 24 percent.
A Busy McGruff in Omaha!
Officer Sonia Elkins and Officer Nikki Lassiter of the Omaha, NE, Police Department shared an amazing fact with us about their crime prevention work: In 2007, McGruff the Crime Dog made 60 appearances at events supported by schools, businesses, and community groups! Recent events where McGruff shared his message include the Safety Expo at the Mall and the 6th Annual Scout Day at the Northwest Precinct. Boy and Girl Scouts of all ages were given the opportunity to earn badges and patches by participating in activities at the event under the watchful eye of McGruff. NCPC thanks Officer Elkins, Officer Lassiter, and all of their colleagues for successfully using McGruff to reach out to their community. —Deborah Boone
