Statement of Paul DelPonte
National Crime Prevention Council
Executive Director
FBI 2022 Crime Statistics

The new crime statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation today show strong progress in reducing the murder rate and other areas of violent crime. This good news is clouded by an alarming number of hate crimes. More than 13,000 Americans fell victim to criminal acts just because of the color of their skin, how they worship, and who they love. Let’s use these tragic events to commit to more community action to say no to hate.

There is a strong correlation between reduction in murders and other violent crimes to efforts that unite the community and law enforcement. Proven crime prevention measures like community policing, school resource officers, Midnight Basketball, and many others send an important message to would-be criminals. Let’s stand up to crime by saying not in our backyard. Funding crime prevention, not defunding, is the way to Take a Bite Out Of Crime.”
